15% of children leave school without a Leaving Certificate, and 3% leave without any qualification at all

Background

The Coalition replaced the Open Your Eyes to Child Poverty Initiative, formed in 1999.

The Initiative successfully lobbied the Irish Government to adopt the goal of ending child poverty and set a target date by which child poverty would be substantially reduced, if not eliminated, in the revised National Anti-Poverty Strategy 2002.

The Initiative also successfully lobbied for the objective of ending child poverty to be contained in the National Children’s Strategy 2000-2010.

The members of the Open Your Eyes to Child Poverty Initiative were Barnardos, Children’s Rights Alliance, Combat Poverty Agency, Focus Ireland, Pavee Point, People with Disabilities in Ireland, National Youth Council of Ireland and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Partner organisations in the End Child Poverty Coalition continue to work together to build on the work begun by the Initiative.
